After I was elected president of PCPPA I sat down and reread the by-laws. To me one thing really stood out. The Purpose:
The objectives and purposes of this association shall be to advance the interests of photography both as an art and as a profession; to create, promote, and maintain cordial relations, cooperation and interchange of thought and opinion freely among all members; to educate; to foster the practical benefits derived from personal acquaintanceship and the discussion of subjects having to do with photography; to cooperate with other organizations which may be striving to accomplish similar purposes.
Attending the meetings I see most aspects of involvement in professional photography represented, from the aspiring professional who has a couple of weddings under his/her belt to the retired studio owner with thousands of hours to their credit. They sit at the same table and share more than just food. At our meetings the flow of information is swift and encouragement is plentiful.
It is a great thing to find other photographers that are at about the same level as your self, spending time discussing goals, plans and problems. After a while you find you have common interests, do dinner once and awhile and even spend a rare day driving around Mt Rainer photographing fall foliage and waterfalls. In short not just friendly competitors but friends, this is one of the special things about our association that we should never lose.
At the November meeting Chic told a story about some of the problems that the association faced early on. For those of you who were not there, ask her to tell you about the backscratchers when you see her. She may curse me for this after she has told the story 20 more times but it is a story that needs to be remembered and retaught occasionally. For those of you who heard it, the story is important because it shows what the early members had to go thru to make changes in the status quo of the time. The “purpose” as stated in the by-laws may seem natural to most of us now but thing have not always been this way.
The art of photography is growing once again. The introduction of color to the black and white world was either a blessing or a curse to most photographers at that time. While I was in college in the early 80’s my instructors still insisted, “There is no fine art color photography”; now color is accepted. Digital is creating new possibilities and also new problems, but a lot of the same rules apply. It is just as important to have your key light coming from the same direction when you merge multiple images in your computer as it is to make sure your fill light does not create a second nose shadow. The medium is different but the concept is the same.
PCPPA was created to fill some of the needs of the members. Some of the needs have not changed. The need for fellowship is still with us but some of our educational needs have changed. What would you like to learn? Who would you like to hear speaking at our meetings? Let myself or your board of directors know how you envision the future of PCPPA. Like everything else, we are all in this together.
I would like to thank all of you, for your support during the
last two years
that you
allowed me to be your president. I would also like to thank the board
members for giving
up their time to help make this a much better organization.
I hope all of you will help Eric Rehn and the new board, to make this
organization become
even stronger. There are many things that can be done to improve this
organization and
the board cannot do it all. So it would be appreciated any help you can
give.
Again THANK YOU!
David

That's what you'll exclaim when you hear the answer to a trivia question or two at this
months Round Table Discussion. Just for grins, let's get out the photographic
trivia and have some fun. When we reviewed the Certified Professional Photographer Exam
last September we had a great time taking the
test. This time the questions will be entirely different. Some will ask about portraiture,
some will ask about commercial work while some will check your knowledge about lab
operations. Some will be basic while some will delve into the darker reaches of
photography. Trivia is always interesting, invigorating, challenging and all
around just good fun. Remember the Round Table Discussion starts at 5:30.
Between 5:30 and 6PM, at the Round Table Discussion, the first three people who
say they read this in the newsletter will quickly get a prize. Come join us for
a great time before the meeting.
