David Lobban - Digital Workflow

Tuesday June 26th, 2001

Digital Photography should I go digital now or should I wait? If I do, how do I show my images to the client and how do I sort them.

Hi, my name is David Lobban and my company is Lobban  Photography in University Place.

I decided to go digital first in my event photography, December is  always a busy Month with Santa pictures at Microsoft and the  numerous company Holiday parties I photographed on Friday and Saturday evenings. I spent Sunday sorting out the film and order  sheets for delivery to the lab on Monday, then Thursday when all the  print packages came back and having to sort, cut and mail them by Friday morning and start all over again.

After I purchased my next two systems, I decided to go completely  digital with my wedding and portrait photography.

I will show you the set up I use for events, and also how I sort images and show them to my clients. I am not going to show you how to use  Photoshop, and I am going to stay away from getting to technical on cameras and programs.

This is a great program for any one who is thinking of getting into digital, or has purchased a digital camera and still has questions on how to show their images.

Message From the President

Brad Bogue

It may sound like an over simplification but we are on the verge of a whole new way of completing photographic assignments while at the same time embracing the past with even more intensity than we usually do. In the last year digital equipment has become easier to use and less expensive for both the consumer and pro. How this will affect your business depends upon how you embrace the past. There are profitable ways to conduct your business learned and passed on by our predecessors. Your very survival will depend upon understanding and applying those principles. Last months program ably presented by Chuck Ropel of Burien Studios is just that kind of knowledge we must know and apply to stay afloat these days. how you answer the phone, how your packages and pricing are presented to the client, when is it the proper time to present pricing so it is most favorably received, what price range should you be in, how fast should your print delivery be to increase value in the clients mind and how should that finished package be wrapped or presented?

The program this month will go hand in hand with both past knowledge and future opportunities. David Lobban has been there and has learned quite a bit about applying the new digital realm to old tried and true practices. there is no better way to learn than to come and experience it all first hand.

Learning what the tried and true practices are and learning what the latest is in professional photography is another value your membership offers. Brad Bogue President,

Visitor Passes Approved By Board

Come, bring an interested Professional Photographer friend to our meeting for free. wait, let me read that again, by golly it does say free.

When you sign in at the front door just sign in your friend also. They can visit regular club meetings twice before being charged. The guest pass does not apply to any special meetings where admission is charged. No, the twenty dollar door charge has not gone away, just moved to the third visit. This is an opportunity to “look the new PCPPA over” before committing any money. How do you do this? Fill out a guest pass at the door, hand it to Carl Lejon, put their name on a name tag sticker, introduce your friend around and enjoy the meeting.

In Memorium

Brad Bogue

With a great feeling of loss, I want you to know of the passing of one of Pierce County Professional Photographers Association's most dedicated members, Joseph Ray on Sunday, June 3rd.

During his life he worked in photography for 50 years, retired from a distinguished career in the Army (received a purple heart medal after being wounded in Korea). He graduated from Pierce College. In 1984 Joe Ray a quiet, unassuming photographer was elected to the position Treasurer of PCPPA. Through the next 16 years he served PCPPA as the Treasurer, in fact to many of us it seemed that Joe had always been treasurer. In 1999 PCPPA honored him with our highest award "The Life Time Membership" which Joe cherished. If you were to look upon the rolls of Professional Photographers of Washington, Masonic Egyptian Lodge #44, Am Vets and Veterans of Foreign Wars you would see his name.

In recognition of Joe's service to the association and diligence in performing the duties and responsibilities of the Treasurer, the board has created a special service award in his honor. The award "The Joseph Ray Exceptional Service Award" will be given annually to the member who has most demonstrated exceptional service to our association. In this way his legacy of service will continue to remind us of Joe, year after year.

Farewell, Joe, we will miss your twinkling eyes and your strong yet quiet disposition.

Roundtable Discussion

Jerry Saunders will lead a discussion on improving communication with your lab to get what you want. What is warm and deep? Does some wage earner in a lab, or the clerk openning your envelope know, have they ever attended a workshop or seminar? Round table discussion take place before the regular meeting in an informal gathering.

The cost is $99.00 for members of SPPA, PPW, PCPPA, PPO, PPI RMPPA, PPBC and PPH. $125.00 for all others. Monday’s luncheon is included

Pierce County District of PPW

David M. Grimes

Kevin McGowan hosted a meeting of the Pierce County District of PPW on Thursday, May 31st. Thirteen people were able to make it... between and among the Proshots programs that were going on all around the area.

Our biggest item of discussion was about the relationship between PCPPA and the PPW District. It, at least, needs defining. We also discussed doing programs and fulfilling the needs of the district members. Most people there were members of both PCPPA and PPW... it is probably the non-PCPPA who might have a different input.

Kevin then gave some discussion about his work and described his competition images. He also discussed the changing commercial photography market.

I have been the District Rep for about two years now and am making a little progress but I could use some help in mailings and following through with ideas presented by members and in putting together or coordinating some of programs that members would like to see us do... any volunteers? Let me know!

Any one who has questions or ideas, please get in touch with me at 253-566-4225 or by e-mail at DMarshallG@AOL.com

Thanks,
David M. Grimes, M. Photog., CPP, FP

Malcom Matheson in August

Pierce County is considering to co sponsor a seminar by Malcom Matheson in August. We would be splitting the cost 50-50 with SPPA and same with the profits. We anticipate there will be many people who are not members of either association who will attend.

The details of the seminar are not set yet, like the actual date and cost would possibly be $29 for members of SPPA and PCPPA members, $10 more for non members. This is a bargain for a world class speaker. Malcom will be speaking in California before and continuing on to speak at the Canadian photographers association after. So the local associations are getting quite a break. Aussies have some unusual, interesting and challenging concepts in wedding photography, stetching the envelope of what is considered a wedding album. Highly recommended.

PCPPA Picnic and July Meeting

A fantastic day on the water is planned for this year’s picnic. Mike Elwell, our regional Kodak rep is openning his Gig Harbor home to us. The party time is also high tide so boats will float, the hot tub will bubble, so bring swim suits, (yes you, cause this ain’t no Fremont parade.)

PCPPA will provide the hot dogs, good ones like last year, fixings and sodas. Mike said he will BBQ some pork, again not just any old pork but the good sweet and juicy Kodak stuff, the kind congress gets. It was suggested that we all bring a salad or desert, or some hor de overs, (see Mike I told you I couldn’t spell it and spell check didn’t help.)

I believe Richard Barschefski of Bellevue will give a talk on location portraits and how to sell them.

From the Narrows Bridge, take the 4th exit off Highway 16, Gig Harbor City Center, cross over the intersection at the top of the ramp straight on to Stinson St. At the bottom of the hill, but before the water please, bear left on Harbor View. 1/4 mile stay on the right at the yeild sign which becomes North Harbor View. Note the old Shoreline Restaurant is now an Anthony’s. Another 1/4 mile you should see a lot of Kodak bags. If not call Mike Elwell at (253) 851-1493
